★★★★☆ - Great!

Great balance of power and size, premium price

Pros

  • Enough juice to power a 14” Macbook Pro and an 11” iPad Pro

  • Two USB-C + one USB-A provides flexibility

  • Rather small size for the power

  • Trustworthy brand

Cons

  • Premium price for the brand name ($60 at time of writing)

  • Not enough power for larger Macbooks

Review

First off, you may not need a power adapter at all. Your computer came with one and you might be happy with it. For me though, portability was an issue (the Macbook chargers are beefy), and I wanted some additional ports to charge from.

Choosing a power adapter can be a little frustrating due to a lack of clarify of requirements (at least for Macbooks). I surprisingly struggled to find a good reference, with Anker’s own blog post being the best I found.

For me this was the right wattage and port count for my needs, but you can browse Anker’s lineup for the combination you want. This one would be overkill if you’re just looking for something to charge your phone, for example.

The other question is about brands. For me, I don’t mind going with whitelabel off-brands for physical items like stands or wrist rests, but when it comes to power I feel better with a known brand. It’s possible the inners are still whitelabel, but in my experience Anker’s customer support has been great. I’ve also had some off-brand power equipment die on me so I’m willing to spend the extra cash. You can however get similar wattage for about half the price if you don’t mind rolling the dice.

Conclusion

Power adapters are fairly particular to your specific needs, so do the research there, but in my experience Anker is a great, if a bit pricey, option.
